Do the animal understand what you're saying? Why not simply recite 
"Namo A'mi'ta'bha'ya" (-ya as in passive voice, for Amitabha). During the 
recitation (many times), visualize (really hard with your mind power in order to 
invite) Amitabha comes down from heaven and takes the cat (soul) with him back up 
to his pure land home. I don't think the cat's soul still hangs around after a few 
days.  

The method is the same for animal or some unknow souls around. If you know
he/she is in other belief system, visualize his/her Yidam (his own deity) and 
recite the deity's name (eg. Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, Alah). It was nothing but 
a mere projection of the "intense desire" to deal with the problem, without prayer 
to any entity in particular. It is not principally important to whom the plea is 
being addressed, but the manner (and your sincere faith) in which it is done that 
invokes the sprits (sentient beings on other side in the same belief system) 
coming to help. For a pet, any sprit will come to help, the animal has no 
preference anyway.
